When you connect your reader, pcscd is supposed to launch and recognize the reader. When you insert your smartcard, pcscd tells the each TokenD to launch and see if they can communicate with the card.
Without pcscd running, PKard has nothing to do. Another suggestion is to try a different reader. If you have a friend or coworker that has one of these readers , you could see if another reader works. You could also try running pcscd manually.
